your name | andy your age | 20 contact information | PM, email, YIM and msn; anyway is good, check my profile for contacts characters | fiver is my numero uno
full name | Fiver Dangermouse Rye nicknames & titles | Dangermouse, Mister Wizard, Science Guy, Spock - any science fiction or pop culture reference will usually get his attention. He has two doctorates, in engineering and experimental physics, making him a non-medical Doctor; he has also lectured which gives him the title of Professor – of course, he only uses theses when he’s being extra specially impressive. age | 22; 09/09/87 sexuality | heterosexual, in theory occupation | computer and technology expert, both human and alien; rift science specialist; engineer and inventor; genius.
family information |- Jason Uriah Rye; father, deceased. Fiver's father died when he was five years old, he has few memories of the man and this lack of a male role model has impacted on his life.
- Regina Mariah Rye nee Cookson; mother, deceased. Religious and overbearing, Fiver was resented by his mother for being more intelligent than her - she disowned him when he left for college at 14. He didn't go to her funeral, five years later.
- Eileen Bethany Rye; sister, 31. Envious of her younger brother's intelligence and annoying curious streak, Fiver hasn't spoken to his oldest sister since he was 12; she left to study cooking at college and hasn't tried to contact him since.
- Rachel Patricia Vimes nee Rye; sister, 28. Due to one of Fiver's less successful childhood experiments, which blew up his sisters cat Snuffkin, he hasn't heard from his sister since she was married - she called him to inform him. Fiver didn't go to the wedding, and hasn't met his niece or nephew; he isn't even aware of their existence.
- Eve Margaret Rye; sister, 25. The wildest of Fiver's siblings left home when she was 16 to travel round the world with a boyfriend. She hasn't been seen or heard from since - the only one of his family Fiver wasn’t hated by, he uses his vast resources to look for her as often as he can.
- Ava Moira Rye; sister, deceased. Once threatened to break all of Fiver's fingers after hearing him playing piano in school. He doesn't like to think about her, let alone talk about her, and didn't really react when she committed suicide.
residence | Fiver has a small apartment in one of Cardiff's many skyscrapers - it is a simple one bedroom flat with an ensuite bathroom and 'breakfast nook' in lieu of a kitchen. Considering his impressive salary, it seems incredibly frugal - until you look at the modifications Fiver has made.
The main room is fairly bare; one wall is entirely devoted to books, DVDs, action figures, comics and other paraphernalia. There are cushions and throws almost covering the floor, also heaped upon the hammock that hangs from the ceiling and can be raised or lowered by a industry-strength pulley on the free wall. The breakfast counter looks fairly ordinary at first glance; further inspection reveals that a draw full of takeout menus, a bread bin and a cheese grater are the only food-related items in that area. Others include an iron, a modified microwave that can probably flatten a small house, a mind-boggling number of 'perpetual motion' toys and a half finished game of 3D chess.
The bedroom has been converted into what may be the most impressive array of computers, televisions and game consoles on Earth; he has human and alien technology hooking him up to anything with a signal. One wall has been modified to be one giant whiteboard, which is usually covered in equations and designs. Fiver has spent a small fortune making this small and very high-up apartment his sanctuary; with over five locks on the door, in a private building, on the top floor - it's safe to say that he likes his privacy.
He also has a small purple hammock slung up in a corner of the Hub, under some stairs – he tends to take naps there so that he can work overnight, keeping an eye on his machines.
physical description | Fiver is the archetypal geek in more than just his habits; with his thin and rather gangly frame, he stands at an average 5’11, though his tendency to duck his head makes him appear shorter. Although uninterested in sports or activities, Fiver sees the rational need for physical fitness; weighing in at a slight 140, he offsets his rather indulgent diet with a regime of exercise.
Earning him the nickname 'Bambi' in his days at UNIT, Fiver's hair is a fawn brown that is inevitably mussed up; when nervous, he has a tendency to run his hands through the fluffy mass. Never longer than his ears, the feathery cut doesn't really need much styling beyond a brief combing - just the way Fiver likes it.
Small and often crinkled in a wry smile or slightly-arrogant laugh, Fiver's eyes are often overlooked. Sparkling and clear, their green color is pale with soft spots of brown - his older sister used to say that he even had freckles in his eyes. Objectively, Fiver would say that he is attractive; he'd talk about his strong jaw line, prominent zygomatic and wide ratio between his clavicles and ilea. His bone structure is rather symmetrical, with his straight nose and pronounced chin; his thin lips usually twisted in a smirk.
His sense of style is rather casual and a little old fashioned; usually found in a shirt and sweater vest, comfy trousers and sneakers. Fiver isn't too bothered with his appearance, citing Einstein’s claim that “once you can accept the universe as being something expanding into an infinite nothing which is something, wearing stripes with plaid is easy.” His random sense of style is enhanced by the random nods to popular culture that seem to appear every now and then; comic book t-shirts and novelty belt buckles are standard fare for Fiver.
In fact, one of his most distinguishing features come from his love of science fiction - the tattoo on his ankle, NCC1701, is the designation of the starship Enterprise. He was goaded into getting it by some of the more manly UNIT types; they got him drunk and took him to get an ink; silently, he hates it.
Another thing that sets him apart, though never seen if he can help it, are the long knarled scars on his back; a reminder of his mother's inability to accept her extraordinary child. played by | fran kranz
personality |
- “and captain james t kirk bows beneath my fists and i am awesome” [geek]
Fiver is a complete geek, and admits it with pride; after all, 'smart people keep the world spinning and get paid well to do it'. Comic books, films, books, television shows...you name it and Fiver probably has the whole series, the action figures and the cuddly toy; though the latter, he would never admit to. From his Darth Vader 'no more tears' shampoo and Batman pajamas, to his comic collection and replica of Captain America's shield - Fiver loves his 'Nerdvana' collection, but doesn't have the normal OCD associated with collecting. He doesn't care about 'mint condition'; he reads his comics, and plays with his toys. It might seem childish from the outset, but Fiver, being the child prodigy he was, never had a childhood; his collection is his own way of reclaiming that, and it lets him get away from some of the responsibility his intellect and job puts on his shoulders.
- “i have nothing to declare except my genius” [genius]
With a colossal IQ of well over 200, Fiver's intelligence defines him. Having been the smartest person he knows from the age of three, it is the most defining thing about him - without it, he believes he would be forgettable, ignorable. It was the factor that got him involved with UNIT, which allowed him to transfer to Torchwood; it allowed him access to technology and information that he only dreamed about while watching Star Trek as a child. Now, it informs his entire life; he constantly increases the breadth of his knowledge, in order to stay at the top of the brainy food chain. Fluent in English, French, Mandarin, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, German, Latin, Klingon, and several African dialects; both writing and speaking. He has moderate expertise in Gaelic, Farsi and Greek; as well as being able to write shorthand and use Morse code. He can quote nearly anything from Spongebob Squarepants to Shakespeare's sonnets, play the piano to concerto standard and likes to mutter strings of prime numbers under his breath while working. He also invented UNITs translation software and continues to update it, while working on countless improvements to the Rift software. His brain owns your brain, and he knows it.
- “everything has been figured out, except how to live” [socially inept]
The price of his vast intellect seems to be that he has the social skills of a dead duck in a bucket. Hiding behind his intelligence, Fiver has never been able to relate to anyone on an emotional or human level; he doesn't understand people, and cannot make himself understood. He is often inappropriate, unaware of what behaviour is socially accepted; he tends to use juvenile jokes to hide this lack of basic skills. His humor is a way of keeping people at a distance, a defense that seems to work; he is ignored or dismissed with rolled eyes and frustrated sighs. It doesn't endear him to others, but as Fiver maintains, he has never sought friends. Being polite has never been his strong point; his superior nature means that he finds it unnecessary to pander to ‘lower life forms’, as well as feeling a need to state things in an overtly blunt way. His patronizing nature makes him fairly irritating to be around, as does his almost child-like need to ask an unending amount of questions of the people around him.
- “i laugh in the face of danger, and then i hide until it goes away” [coward]
Fiver is not brave; his natural instinct is firmly stuck on ‘flight’ or possible ‘hide’. Perhaps resulting from his brutal childhood, he cannot cope with violence or even raised voices, and reacts with glib humor and denial. He hides this cowardice behind his intelligence and claimed pacifism – as an evolved human, it is not for him to resort to violence as they have ‘several semi-muscular males with increased adrenaline’ to handle that portion of the job. Though fit enough to hold his own should he ever be put in the position, Fiver is more likely to run away and save his own skin – a part of him, hidden deep in the logic and superiority complexes, is ashamed of this; part of him wants to be the hero, the selfless kind of man who would step in for others. Something in him wants what he read about n his comics…but in the end, he is still just a young boy who is terrified of everything. Fiver has numerous phobias, mostly irrational childhood fears that he could never shake, though some have a darker root; ridiculed throughout his life for his fear of the dark, no one would trace it back to being locked in the basement as a child. His mother often used that kind of punishment; locking him away in the car boot or small cupboard under the stairs. Now, any lack of light or enclosed space sends him into a panic – even going down into the vaults makes him incredibly nervous.
- “traded your worth for these scars, for your only company” [broken]
Not immediately apparent, due to careful editing of all but the highest clearance personnel files, but Fiver comes from the worst kind of background. The youngest in a family that loathed those better than them, he grew up being beaten down at every opportunity by a misandrist mother and indifferent sisters. From as early as three years of age, Fiver was subject to physical abuse, and it continued until he was fifteen, and able to leave. Aside from the deep physical scars that abuse left, Fiver has lingering emotional scars that influence his life to this day; he suffers night terrors, brought on by nightmares of his mother and his lingering fear of the dark. His abuse has also served to isolate him, building on his innate awkwardness to distance him from emotional attachments – he fears trust, because if his own family could mark him so mercilessly, why would the kindness of strangers be any different?
- “mathematically i'm having it, i want to live on science alone” [amoral]
While not completely without conscience, Fiver relies more on the rational application of logic that he does any strict moral code. While others adhere to ideals of right and wrong, based on emotional and social connections, he uses reason to decide whether a course is worth pursuing. The fact that emotions and morals cloud other people’s judgment remains mystifying to him; almost Vulcan in his cold calculation, it never occurs to him to ‘listen to his heart’, not when his brain is talking at least. He's simply more likely to do what is scientifically ethical rather than morally and socially ethical; if a rational argument can convince him that something is necessary or useful, the morality can be ignored. This makes Fiver rather susceptible to coercion, as his reliance on logic combined with his need for affection and attention can leave him vulnerable to the right person – given a logical reason, Fiver could do anything from steal a Mars Bar, to assassinate a politician.
- “so i ran away to kensington gardens and lived a long long time among the fairies” [childlike]
Due to his immense brainpower, Fiver has always been considered ‘older than his years’, but the difference between intellect and maturity is as wide as the Grand Canyon. While he has knowledge that puts him far ahead of the greatest and oldest minds of this century, the lack of a real childhood has meant that he has the maturity of a 13 year old. Whether flash-freezing bananas to smash and put on his cereal or using one of the alien musical instruments to get the most hits on Myspace Music, Fiver always has an air of immaturity about it, that isn’t helped by his comic book t-shirts and action figure covered work station, under which he keeps a mini trampoline – he maintains that thinking up new and brilliant ways of saving the Earth is infinitely easier when bouncing up and down. His immaturity also manifests in an incapability to perform those tasks associated with rites of passage; he can’t swim or ride a bike, drive or play any kind of sport that isn’t played on a screen – he knows the theory behind all these things, though he learned them int order to bluff the fact that he cannot perform them.
- “i want you to need me like i need you” [needy]
In psychology, Maslow’s theory of needs dictates that individuals strive for self actualization, by working their way up a hierarchy of basic needs. These are Basic; physical needs such as breathing, food and water – Safety; of body, employment, resources – Place; belonging, friendship, family, sexual and emotion intimacy – and Esteem; self-esteem, confidence, respect from others and by others. Though Fiver doesn’t believe in the ‘soft science Jedi mind tricks’ of psychology, his personality is great affected by his lack of ‘Place’ and his constant desire for ‘Esteem’. Fiver is driven by his need to be needed, though he would never admit it – ever since leaving his childhood hell behind, he has struggled to belong somewhere and feel needed. He has never had a place in the world, or a family, or a workplace where he was accepted and needed – his intelligence and lack of social skills make it hard for him to connect, and his inability any kind of close relationship has left him practically isolated for years. This involuntary solitude had made him defensive; he pushes away the people he wants to be close to and accepted by, until his need for praise and recognition form the only contact he has with others. His need for acceptance is wuite well hidden, since it has backfired on him several times; the tattoo on his ankle serves to remind him of this weakness. When he joined UNIT, he was a geek serving amongst the buff and manly men of the army - they pressured him into getting the tattoo and Fiver, convinced that it would let him into their close knit group, went along with it. In the end, his choice of tattoo became the source of ridicule amongst the force, and he withdrew further into his own academic elitist world.
greatest fear | Though Fiver fears many things to varying degrees, his greatest fear is the indifference of others; he cannot bear to be ignored or overlooked or, worst of all, rejected. He craves attention and recognition, because he is terrified of being alone.
greatest desire | Fiver's greatest desire is to meet the elusive man who turns up in the most interesting and classified of documents; the Doctor. Having read all the Torchwood reports and the UNIT data on this alien, Fiver would love nothing more than to come face-to-face with his man who, aside from saving the universe, has time traveled. On the surface, Fiver just wants to meet someone who is, supposedly, smarter than him - truthfully, it's not the ALIEN he's curious about...it's the SHIP.
personal treasure | Ask him, and he'll say his brain. It's true, really; Fiver values his intelligence above everything and everyone else. It gives him status, gives him purpose and explains the world to him, makes sense of things; his intelligence makes him special.
biggest secret | At 23 years old, Fiver is still a virgin; in fact, he has only been kissed a grand total of 3 times. This lack of experience and his general ineptitude around members of the opposite sex are something he tries very hard to hide; though not unusual amongst the academic community, he still believes it lessens him. So he doesn't admit to it.
best memory | Being recruited into UNIT and finding out that there was a whole universe of science to explore, as well as being allowed to tinker with what they had found.
worst memory | A year before he left for college, Fiver’s mother locked him in the trunk of her car for 2 days; it was punishment for breaking a dish while washing up.
history | Fiver was a child prodigy, born into a less than scientific family and growing up with older sisters who weren't thrilled about having to deal with an annoying genius boy in their house. His precocious attitude and wide knowledge endeared only resentment and annoyance from his mother and siblings. He got little encouragement from his mother, who was fiercely religious and refused to congratulate him on 'what was given to him by God'.
From a young age, Fiver was proud of his intelligence - his mother was as archaic in her parenting as his father had been before his death, and would regularly discipline her son. This has left him with more than psychological scarring - Fiver's back is covered in long, knarled scars from being struck with a belt. However, his mothers brutal abuse did nothing to temper his arrogance and pride; Fiver, convinced of his mental superiority, knew that his mother was simply jealous. Aware that he was weak physically; he applied himself even more academically, so that he might get away from 'the family that evolution forgot'.
He moved through high school quickly, leaving early to begin his under-graduate studies at fifteen. The state, seeing the value on investing in such intelligence, paid for his education and accommodation. He as awarded a Bachelor of Science three years later, and began work on his Masters in Theoretical Physics - during this time he helped to make several advancements in medical technology and made significant advancements to the governments translation software.
While working on his doctorates, he was recruited by UNIT to work on enhancing and understanding alien technology - he was pivotal in the Project Indigo Prototype, as well as modifying several pieces of alien tech for the Large Hadron Collider project. The next four years were spent working up through UNIT, gaining security clearance and devouring all the information he was privy to - he helped develop better weapons, satellites and communications, in return for access to classified files. He started working on the Rift and its science, becoming a theoretical-expert on the phenomenon; when he had finished his doctorates, he asked to be transferred to Wales.
During the 456 crisis, UNIT brought Fiver in to work with their communication teams; he was fascinated by Torchwood and their methods, salvaging technology from the rubble of the Hub. While doing so under UNIT orders, he used various connections to have the injured pterodactyl, Myfanwy, transported to a secure space for treatment. It was his interest in Torchwood that led to his recruitment, though his continuing care for Myfanwy earned him points; he was more than happy to join and, within weeks of starting, greatly improved the Rift monitor software, as well as the surveillance system. Oh you are so close to having Fiver Fye's application accepted! I spotted only a few problems Firstly, you left out the sexuality section. Make sure you check the Application Code to see if you accidentally missed or deleted anything. Fix this and then Science Guy is accepted! He is sort very adorable. His flat? Wonderful to picture in your head. I can just imagine him in there, being all Fiver-like. Haha. Family history? It made me want to snuggle him and bake him cookies or something. Also, it would be helpful to have a space between the paragraphs. This makes it easier to read. That is extremely important, but you know. Another thing; my math isn't so good but from where we are in the roleplay, Fiver would be twenty two, not twenty three. He would be turning twenty three in September and it is still June in-game. You can either make him younger, or change his birth date.
